If you have a long-term storage unit that you use for your personal belongings, you are going to want to make sure that you take some time at least once a year to go through and organize your storage unit. Organizing and cleaning up your storage unit at least once a year will help you keep track of what you have in storage, and will help you manage the items.

Bring Boxes with You

You are going to want to bring boxes with you to help you sort through your items. Depending on the size of your storage unit and how many belongings you have stored, you'll want to bring at least four boxes.

One box will be for items that you can donate or sell, another for items that need to be thrown away, one for items that you want to take out of storage, and one for items that you want to put back in storage.

This will allow you to have a place to put everything as you go through your storage unit. Try to donate as many items as possible that you don't want, and keep the throw-away box for items that are junk and can't be donated or recycled.

Depending on the items you have in your storage unit, you may need separate boxes for donation items and recycle items. For example, you may recycle an obsolete computer, but donate a working laptop.

Work One Area at a Time

If you have a lot of items in your storage unit, you are going to want to work through it one area at a time. You don't want to pull everything out of your storage unit and go through it all at once; that process can be overwhelming.

Instead, pick one section of your storage unit and start by going through that small area; this will give you a manageable amount of space to organize. Since you are not trying to open up space in your home, but are going through a storage unit, you don't need to rush the process.

Update Your Inventory List

When you finish going through an area of your storage unit, you'll want to update your inventory list. Remove all the items that you threw out, donated, or recycled from your inventory list. Put new labels on your boxes and create a new inventory list that states everything that you went through. For insurance and organizational purposes, it is important to keep an updated inventory list.

About Me
Storing our Child’s Belongings

My husband and I are excitedly planning the arrival of our first child. When we decided to start a family a couple of years ago, we knew we needed to add storage space to our small home. To accomplish this task, we constructed a new family room with a beautiful bay window. We added a seat to the bay window with a built-in storage compartment. We plan to put our kid’s toys in this neat storage box. We also built two large closets. We installed closet rods and shelving in these closets. Now, our little one will have plenty of organized places to store his things. On this blog, I hope you will discover the best ways to add storage space in your home for your growing family to utilize. Enjoy!
